Course grade = current grade x (1 - remaining weight) + remaining average x remaining weight.
Solved for what you need: needed = (target - current x (1 - remaining weight)) / remaining weight, with the weight as a fraction (40% = 0.4).
This is the general case for any mix of remaining work. When only the final exam is left, the final grade calculator does the same sum with the exam's weight.
You have 82% with 40% of the course still to come and want an 85%. Needed = (85 - 82 x 0.6) / 0.4 = (85 - 49.2) / 0.4 = 89.5% average on the remaining work.
For the letter grades from the same start: a B+ (87%) needs 94.5%, a B (83%) needs 84.5% and a C (73%) needs 59.5%. An A- (90%) would need 102%, so it is out of reach.
Later in the term: 88% with 25% left, aiming for 90%, needs (90 - 88 x 0.75) / 0.25 = 96%.
Going the other way: if you average 75% on the remaining 40%, the course grade is 82 x 0.6 + 75 x 0.4 = 79.2%, a C+.
Take your target, subtract your current grade times the share of the course already graded, and divide by the share still to come. With 82% now, 40% left and an 85% target: (85 - 82 x 0.6) / 0.4 = 89.5%.
Use your instructor's A cut-off as the target (93% on the common scale, 90% at many schools). The table under the calculator shows the score needed for every letter grade at once.
The maths is the same. This page treats all remaining work as one block (assignments, tests, projects and the final together). The final grade calculator is for when only the final exam is left.
Then the target is out of reach on the remaining work alone. Look at a lower target, or ask whether extra credit or a dropped score is available.
Use your points so far as the current percentage, and remaining points divided by total points as the remaining weight. The formula works the same way.
