This is a widely used US convention, not an official standard. Schools set their own bands: some start an A at 90%, some have no D-, and some use A- 3.67 instead of 3.7. Your school's handbook or registrar has the scale that counts.
A GPA cannot be turned back into one exact percentage: a 3.0 is a B, and a B covers everything from 83% to just under 87%. So the honest answer is a band.
For a GPA between two letters, the calculator places each letter at the middle of its band (B 3.0 at 85%, B+ 3.3 at 88.5%, A- 3.7 at 91.5%, A 4.0 at 96.5%) and reads the GPA off the straight line between the two nearest letters. That gives one number to work with; it is an estimate, not a conversion your school will use.
A 3.0 GPA is a B average: 83-86% on this chart, about 85%.
A 3.5 GPA sits halfway between a B+ (3.3, 87-89%) and an A- (3.7, 90-92%), so the estimate is about 90%.
A 2.5 GPA sits between a C+ (2.3, 77-79%) and a B- (2.7, 80-82%): about 80%.
A 4.0 GPA is an A or A+ in every class: 93% and above on this chart. Going the other way? Use the percentage to GPA converter.
Find the letter grade your GPA matches on your school's scale and read off its percentage band. On the common US scale a 3.0 is a B (83-86%) and a 3.7 is an A- (90-92%). For a GPA between two letters, estimate between the two bands.
About 90% on the common US scale. A 3.5 is halfway between a B+ (3.3, 87-89%) and an A- (3.7, 90-92%). Your school's scale may put it a point or two either way.
A 4.0 means an A in every class, which is 93% and above on the common scale (some schools start an A at 90%). The 4.0 does not tell you how far above the line each grade was.
No. Schools set their own grade bands, and formulas such as multiplying by 25 give different answers from the chart. Use the scale your school publishes; this page shows the common US convention and labels the result as an estimate.
Not on this chart. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for Honors or AP classes, so a 4.3 does not mean 100%+. Convert your unweighted GPA instead.
