High School GPA Calculator

Free high school GPA calculator: weighted and unweighted GPA with Honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) classes, per semester and cumulative. No signup.

Free, and no account is needed. The calculation happens instantly in your browser.

How it works

  1. Add each class with its letter grade, its level (Regular, Honors or AP/IB) and its credits.
  2. Add a semester for each term you want counted; each one shows its own weighted and unweighted GPA.
  3. Your cumulative weighted and unweighted GPA across every semester updates as you type. Change the Honors and AP bonuses if your school uses different values.

Weighted vs unweighted GPA

Unweighted GPA puts every class on the same 4.0 scale: an A is 4.0 whether the class is regular, Honors or AP.

Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes. The most common rule is +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and dual-enrollment classes, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0 and a B+ in Honors counts as 3.8. An F gets no bonus.

Schools differ: some use other bonuses, some cap weighted GPA, and some do not weight at all. Use the numbers in your school handbook if they differ from the defaults.

Worked example

One semester, 1 credit each: Honors English A- (3.7 + 0.5 = 4.2), AP Biology B+ (3.3 + 1.0 = 4.3), Algebra II A (4.0) and Spanish B (3.0).

Weighted GPA = (4.2 + 4.3 + 4.0 + 3.0) / 4 = 15.5 / 4 = 3.88. Unweighted GPA = (3.7 + 3.3 + 4.0 + 3.0) / 4 = 14.0 / 4 = 3.50.

Add a second semester (AP US History A = 5.0, Honors Chemistry B = 3.5, Precalculus A- = 3.7, and a half-credit PE A = 4.0 x 0.5) and the cumulative weighted GPA is (15.5 + 14.2) / 7.5 credits = 3.96; unweighted it is (14.0 + 12.7) / 7.5 = 3.56.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the same 4.0 scale for every class, so an A is 4.0 whether the class is regular or AP. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, usually +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in an AP class counts as 5.0.

How much do Honors and AP classes add?

The most common rule is +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and dual-enrollment classes, which is what this calculator uses by default. Some schools use other values or do not weight at all, so you can change both bonuses to match your school.

How do I calculate my cumulative high school GPA?

Add up the grade points (grade value x credits) from every semester and divide by the total credits. The calculator does this across all the semesters you add, for both the weighted and unweighted GPA.

Which GPA do colleges look at?

Many colleges recalculate GPA their own way, often unweighted and using only core academic classes, and read it alongside the difficulty of your schedule. Your transcript GPA is the one your school reports.

Does an F get the Honors or AP bonus?

No. In this calculator an F is 0.0 on both scales, which matches most schools. Check your school handbook if you are unsure.
