Letter Grade to GPA Chart

Letter grade to GPA chart for the 4.0 scale with plus/minus values on both common scales (A- 3.7 or 3.67), plus a quick converter for a list of grades.

Free, and no account is needed. The conversion happens instantly in your browser.

How it works

  1. Pick your school's plus/minus scale: A- 3.7, B+ 3.3 (tenths) or A- 3.67, B+ 3.33 (thirds).
  2. Add your letter grades and the credits for each class.
  3. Read the grade points for each class and the credit-weighted GPA.

Letter grade to grade points

Whole letters are the same on every 4.0 scale. The plus and minus values come in two common versions: tenths (3.7, 3.3, 2.7 ...) and thirds (3.67, 3.33, 2.67 ...). Some schools have no A+ or no D-, and a few give an A+ 4.33. Your registrar's catalog lists the values that apply to you.

Pass (P), withdrawn (W) and incomplete (I) grades usually carry no grade points and are left out of the GPA.

Worked example

A- in a 4-credit class, A- in a 3-credit class and B in a 3-credit class.

Tenths scale: 3.7 x 4 + 3.7 x 3 + 3.0 x 3 = 34.9 grade points over 10 credits = 3.49.

Thirds scale: 3.67 x 4 + 3.67 x 3 + 3.0 x 3 = 34.69 over 10 credits = 3.47. Same grades, a slightly different GPA, which is why it matters which scale your school uses.

Frequently asked questions

What is an A- on the 4.0 scale?

3.7 at most schools, or 3.67 at schools that use thirds for plus and minus grades.

What is a B+ in GPA?

3.3, or 3.33 on the thirds scale. A B is 3.0 and a B- is 2.7 (or 2.67).

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?

At most schools an A+ counts as 4.0, the same as an A. Some colleges give it 4.33. Check your registrar's grading policy.

How do I turn letter grades into a GPA?

Convert each letter to grade points, multiply by the class's credits, add those up and divide by the total credits. Pass/fail and withdrawn classes are usually left out.

Why do two GPA calculators give me different answers?

Usually the plus/minus scale: 3.7 vs 3.67 for an A-, or 4.0 vs 4.33 for an A+. Pick the scale your school uses.
