Free Kahoot alternative with AI: what Scholarize does, and where Kahoot is better
Kahoot's free plan has no AI question tools. Scholarize Brain Battles are free with AI-written questions, but hold up to 8 players, not a whole class.
Kahoot prices and limits below are quoted from kahoot.com/schools/plans, checked 24 Oct 2026. Scholarize facts come from our own pricing page and code.
How it works
- Sign in to Scholarize with a free account (no card).
- Open Brain Battles and choose Create Battle.
- Type a subject and pick a battle type and a difficulty (easy, medium or hard). When you start the battle, AI writes the multiple-choice questions and explanations, which took about 5 seconds in our test on 24 Oct 2026.
- Turn on Battle Royale for 4, 5, 6 or 8 players, or leave it off for a 1 v 1 match.
- Copy the battle link and share it. Each student opens it, signs in and joins.
The short answer
If you want one game for a whole class on a shared screen, Kahoot is the better tool, and its free plan may be enough for a small group. If you want AI to write the questions without paying, Scholarize Brain Battles do that on the free plan, for groups of up to 8 students aged 13 and over.
Scholarize is not a like-for-like Kahoot replacement. It is a study app for older students that includes live quiz battles. Read the limits below before you plan a lesson around it.
Kahoot's teacher plans (kahoot.com, checked 24 Oct 2026)
- Kahoot! Go is free. The plans page gives two different player limits for it: 40 participants in the feature table, and "Up to 10 participants per game" in the FAQ. Check the page before you count on either number.
- AI question creation (from a topic, a URL, a Wikipedia article or a PDF) is not included in Kahoot! Go. It starts with Kahoot!+ Bronze.
- Kahoot!+ Bronze: $3 a month, $36 billed annually, up to 50 participants. AI creation from a topic, URL, Wikipedia or files up to 3 pages.
- Kahoot!+ Silver: $7 a month, $84 billed annually, up to 100 participants. AI creation from files up to 150 pages.
- Kahoot!+ Gold: $12 a month, $144 billed annually, up to 200 participants. Kahoot! One: $19 a month, $228 billed annually, up to 800.
- Kahoot's FAQ says its educational plans are billed upfront for the whole year.
What Scholarize Brain Battles actually do
- Brain Battles are included in the free plan. Creating or joining one needs a free account, and there is no extra charge for it.
- AI writes every question from the subject you type: a set of 8 multiple-choice questions, each with an explanation. They are pitched at college level, even on the easy setting.
- Battles run live with a leaderboard. A standard battle is 1 v 1. Battle Royale mode takes 4, 5, 6 or 8 players, each with 3 lives.
- Battle types include Quiz Race, Speed Blitz, Survival and Co-op Study (the group against the questions).
- Students join from the battle link you share, and each one needs their own Scholarize account. Our Terms require users to be 13 or older, with a parent's or guardian's consent under 18.
- Brain Battles do not play questions you write yourself. If you want a quiz from your own notes, the quiz generator turns pasted text into a quiz with answer explanations that you can share. That is a self-paced quiz, not a live battle, and the free plan includes 2 a month.
Where Kahoot is better
- Class size. Kahoot's paid plans go up to 50, 100, 200 or 800 participants in one game. A Brain Battle tops out at 8.
- Shared-screen play. Kahoot hosts a live game with the questions on one shared screen. Scholarize has no host or projector mode: every student plays on their own device.
- Your own questions. In Kahoot you write or edit the questions. Brain Battle questions come only from AI.
- Younger students. Kahoot sells K-12 school plans. Scholarize is for ages 13 and up, and battle questions are written at college level.
- Familiarity and polish. Kahoot is the name most students and colleagues already know, with music, nicknames and student reports on its plans.
Where Scholarize fits
- You teach high school or college and want quick competitive review in small groups or pairs.
- You want AI-written questions without paying for a Kahoot+ plan.
- You want students to keep studying afterwards: the same free account includes the AI tutor (10 questions a month), the flashcard generator and the quiz generator.
- Paid plans, if you outgrow the free limits: Pro $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year, Semester Pass $19.99 once for 4 months, Team $49.99 a month for up to 25 members. Full details are on the pricing page.
Try one before class
Try a battle with a colleague before you use one in class: start a Brain Battle. It is free on the Scholarize free plan.
