Free Thesis Statement Generator

Free thesis statement generator: describe your topic, pick the essay type, get a thesis plus 3 alternatives. With weak vs strong examples and a checklist.

Your first one is free with no account and no email. A free account then gives you 3 a month.

How it works

  1. Describe your essay topic in a sentence or two (up to 500 characters).
  2. Pick the essay type: argumentative, analytical, expository, or compare-contrast. Add your position if you already have one.
  3. Get one primary thesis statement and three alternatives that take different angles, plus an explanation of why the primary works and tips to sharpen it.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement is the one or two sentences, usually at the end of your introduction, that tell the reader what your essay will claim and how it will get there. Every body paragraph should exist to support it. If a paragraph does not help prove the thesis, either the paragraph or the thesis needs to change.

It is not your topic. "Climate policy" is a topic. "Coastal cities should stop issuing permits for new building in flood zones, because insurance and rebuilding costs fall on taxpayers who never chose the risk" is a thesis: it says what you think, and it gives you something to prove.

The three parts of a strong thesis: claim, reasons, scope

Put together: "In rural high schools [scope], replacing printed textbooks with tablets has widened gaps in homework completion [claim] because many students have no reliable home internet [reason]." Label the three parts in your own draft. Whichever one you cannot find is the one to add.

Argumentative thesis statement example

An argumentative thesis takes a side a reasonable person could disagree with, and says why. Formula: [claim] because [strongest reason], even though [best objection].

Weak: “Library fines are bad.”

Improved: “Public libraries should stop charging overdue fines on children's cards, because the fear of a fine keeps some families from borrowing at all, even though a few books will come back later than they do now.”

Why the improved version is better: The weak version is an opinion with no reasoning and no scope. The improved version names who should act (public libraries), on what (children's cards), gives a reason the essay can support with evidence, and admits the strongest objection so the reader knows it will be answered.

Analytical thesis statement example

An analytical thesis breaks a text, event or dataset into parts and says what those parts reveal. It is a claim about how something works, not whether it is good. Formula: [subject] uses [element] to [effect], which shows [interpretation].

Weak: “Frankenstein is about the dangers of science.”

Improved: “In Frankenstein, the creature learns to speak by listening through a cottage wall, so his eloquence becomes a measure of how completely he has been shut out of the family he studies.”

Why the improved version is better: The weak version restates a theme almost every reader already knows. The improved version points to one specific detail in the text, says what effect it has, and offers an interpretation someone could test against the novel, which gives each body paragraph a job.

Expository thesis statement example

An expository thesis explains rather than argues, but it still needs a shape: what you will explain and in what order. Formula: [subject] works through [stage one], [stage two] and [stage three].

Weak: “Vaccines are very important for your health.”

Improved: “A vaccine prepares the immune system in three steps: it shows the body a harmless version of a germ's surface markers, the body builds antibodies and memory cells against them, and those memory cells respond faster if the real germ arrives.”

Why the improved version is better: The weak version is a value judgement an explanatory essay cannot develop. The improved version tells the reader exactly what will be explained and maps the body paragraphs in order, so the essay has a structure before you write it.

Compare and contrast thesis statement example

A compare-and-contrast thesis names what two subjects share, the difference that matters, and why it matters. Formula: although [A] and [B] both [shared ground], [key difference], which means [so what].

Weak: “Handwritten notes and typed notes both have pros and cons.”

Improved: “Handwritten and typed notes both record a lecture, but handwriting forces you to condense ideas as you go while typing makes it easy to copy words verbatim, which makes handwriting the better fit for concept-heavy courses and typing the better fit for courses where exact wording matters.”

Why the improved version is better: "Pros and cons" promises a list, not an argument. The improved version sets out the shared ground, the one difference the essay will develop, and the conclusion that difference leads to, so the comparison goes somewhere.

Research paper thesis statement example

A research paper thesis states the answer your sources support, not the subject you researched. It usually starts as a working thesis and gets sharper as you read. Formula: [evidence] suggests that [specific finding] in [scope], so [implication].

Weak: “This paper will discuss the four-day school week.”

Improved: “The evidence from districts that have adopted a four-day school week suggests it can help small rural districts recruit teachers, but it should not be adopted where families have no affordable childcare on the fifth day.”

Why the improved version is better: The weak version announces a topic. The improved version takes a qualified position, limits it to the setting the evidence covers, and states a condition, which tells the reader what the sources will be used to show. Check every factual part of a thesis like this against your own sources before you commit to it.

Test your thesis: a 6-point checklist

Run any thesis through these checks, whether you wrote it, the generator suggested it, or you rewrote one of its alternatives.

Common thesis statement mistakes

How to use a thesis generator responsibly

Treat the output as brainstorming, like a suggestion from a classmate. It gives you four angles quickly when you are stuck, but it does not know your sources, your instructor or your class discussions, so the final thesis has to come from you.

Check your school's and your instructor's policy on AI tools before you use any of them, including this one. Policies differ between schools and even between courses. If you are unsure, ask, and disclose how you used it if your course expects that.

Then make it yours: pick the angle closest to what you want to argue, rewrite it in your own words, run it through the checklist above, and confirm your evidence supports every clause.

Why use a thesis generator instead of just asking ChatGPT?

A general chatbot will happily write a thesis. The difference here is structure: you choose the essay type and get four options at once, plus a short explanation of why the primary one works, so you compare angles instead of accepting the first sentence you are given. The same free Scholarize account also includes an AI tutor that cites its sources and a study plan generator.

After the thesis: find and cite your sources

A thesis is only as strong as the evidence behind it. The research workbench searches OpenAlex, Crossref and arXiv for papers on your topic. To cite them, the APA citation generator and the MLA citation generator format websites, books, journal articles and YouTube videos in APA 7 or MLA 9, with in-text citations included. Need Chicago too? The citation generator does all three.

Frequently asked questions

Is the thesis statement generator free?

Yes. Your first thesis statement needs no account and no email. After that, a free account gives you 3 a month, and Pro ($6.99 a month) gives you 200.

What is a thesis statement?

The sentence, occasionally two, that states your essay's main claim and how you will support it. It usually ends the introduction, and every body paragraph should help prove it.

What are the three parts of a thesis statement?

A claim (what you want the reader to accept), reasons (why, in the order your body paragraphs will cover them) and scope (the limits, such as a time, place, group or text, that make the claim provable in the length you have).

What kinds of essays does the generator support?

Argumentative, analytical, expository and compare-contrast essays. Choose General for anything else, such as a research paper, and add your own position to steer the result.

How long should a thesis statement be?

Usually one sentence, occasionally two. If it runs longer, it is generally carrying reasons or evidence that belong in the body paragraphs.

Where does the thesis statement go?

Usually at the end of the introduction, just before the first body paragraph starts supporting it, unless your assignment asks for something different.

Can a thesis statement be a question?

No. A question can open your introduction, but the thesis is your answer to it. If your draft thesis ends in a question mark, answer the question and use the answer.

Is using an AI thesis generator cheating?

It depends on your school's and instructor's policy, so check it first. Where it is allowed, use the output as a starting point, rewrite it in your own words, and make sure your own evidence supports it. The generator writes thesis statements only, not essays.
