Quizlet is one of the go-to flashcard services for students, and its free version is ad-supported. Its paid plans, as listed on Quizlet's upgrade page, are Quizlet Plus at $35.99/year ($2.99/month billed annually), which adds ad-free studying, 3 practice tests, 3 Q&A or textbook solutions and 20 rounds of Learn a month, and Plus Unlimited at $44.99/year, which removes those caps.

If you would rather not pay, or you want to generate cards from your own notes with AI, the free alternatives below are worth comparing.

Using Visual Learning Alongside Scholarize

Visual learning is a powerful approach to retaining information, and you can pair this technique with Scholarize to improve your memory and studying experience. One way to incorporate visual learning is through the use of diagrams, mind maps, or concept maps. By creating a visual representation of the material you're studying, you can better organize your thoughts and connect different pieces of information. For example, when studying for a psychology exam, you might create a mind map of the different theories and concepts, using colors and symbols to highlight key points.

  • Use diagrams to illustrate complex concepts, such as the water cycle or the human body systems.
  • Create concept maps to show relationships between ideas, such as the different branches of mathematics or the historical context of a literary work.
  • Make use of mnemonics, such as acronyms or rhymes, to help you remember key terms or formulas.

By incorporating visual learning techniques into your studying routine, you can improve your retention and recall of information, making it easier to succeed in your courses. Scholarize's quiz and flashcard generators can then help you check that you remember what your visual aids show.

Does This Free Quizlet Alternative Help You Avoid Study Burnout?

It's easy to get caught up in the pressure to perform well academically, but neglecting your physical and mental well-being in the process can lead to burnout. That's why it's essential to establish a healthy studying routine that balances academics with self-care.

Try breaking up your studying sessions into shorter intervals with regular breaks in between. This can help you stay focused and avoid fatigue, reducing the risk of burnout. Additionally, make time for exercise, meditation, or other activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

By prioritizing your well-being, you can maintain a healthy studying routine that supports your academic success without sacrificing your mental and physical health. Scholarize can help you stay on track with your studying and provide you with the tools you need to succeed, making it a valuable resource for students looking to maintain a healthy balance between academics and self-care.

Other Free Quizlet Alternatives Students Are Using in 2026

Below are six other services students use instead of Quizlet, two of which are winding down.

1. Anki (Desktop + Mobile)

Anki is open-source spaced-repetition software with the SM-2 and FSRS schedulers. The computer version (Windows, macOS, Linux), AnkiDroid for Android and AnkiWeb sync are free; the official iOS app, AnkiMobile, is $24.99 on the App Store.

  • Pros: Powerful scheduling, large library of shared decks, full control over card layouts, add-ons.
  • Cons: Steep learning curve, no built-in AI card generator, interface feels dated.

2. Brainscape

Brainscape's free Basic plan lets you type unlimited flashcards, use AI to make hundreds of cards, study with spaced repetition and track progress. Pro ($7.99/month on yearly billing) adds unlimited AI cards, images and sounds on cards, Certified decks and private content.

  • Pros: Clean UI, confidence-based repetition, easy sharing of decks.
  • Cons: Images on cards and studying other people's public decks need Pro.

3. Cram.com (retiring 9 November 2026)

Cram.com announces on its home page that it will retire on November 9, 2026 and stay accessible until then. Until that date it offers an AI flashcard maker, Learn, Test and Cram modes, spaced repetition and games.

  • Pros: Large library of student-made sets, file import.
  • Cons: Shutting down, so don't build a new deck library there.

4. StudyBlue (shut down)

StudyBlue no longer exists: studyblue.com now redirects to Chegg's flashcards page, which says Chegg's flashcards are "getting an update", so we could not check their current features.

5. Quizizz, now Wayground

Quizizz has been renamed Wayground and is now a K-12 teaching platform. Its Basic plan is free for teachers and includes assessments, presentations, flashcards and AI generation; School and District plans are quote-based.

  • Pros: Gamified live and student-paced quizzes, AI question generation on the free teacher plan.
  • Cons: Built for teachers running classes, not for students making their own study decks.

6. Memrise

Memrise is a language-learning app built around thousands of short videos of native speakers, plus phrasebooks and community word lists. Its site did not show plan prices when we checked.

  • Pros: Engaging native-speaker videos, many languages.
  • Cons: Languages only, so not a general Quizlet replacement.

Which Free Quizlet Alternative Fits Your Study Style Best?

If you need AI‑driven card creation, on‑the‑fly quizzes, and a personalized study plan, Scholarize wins hands down. It runs in your browser and can be installed as a web app (there is no native mobile app or offline mode), so your sets follow your account across devices.

For subjects that demand heavy customization—like medical terminology with complex diagrams—Anki’s card layouts and add-ons still reign.

When you’re learning a language and love video immersion, Memrise’s native clips give you context that plain flashcards can’t match. Use it alongside Scholarize for vocab reinforcement.

If you thrive on competition, Scholarize’s Brain Battles are live multiplayer quiz battles with leaderboards; Wayground (formerly Quizizz) does similar live games when your teacher runs them.

If you have decks on Cram.com, export or move them before it retires on 9 November 2026; StudyBlue is already gone.

Finally, if you’re comfortable navigating a slightly clunky interface and want full control over the spacing algorithm, Anki remains a solid free choice.

Bottom line: pick the tool that aligns with how you study. If you want the most feature‑rich, zero‑cost experience, start with Scholarize and see how its AI tutor and study‑plan engine change your workflow. You can always add a secondary app for a niche need, like language videos on Memrise.
