Best for...

  • Mindgrasp: best if you want one tool for the whole lecture. It turns lectures, readings and links into notes, flashcards and quizzes with three question types and links back to the source. You pay after the trial.
  • NoteGPT: best free option. The quiz generator is free and takes almost any file or a YouTube link. It names only multiple-choice questions.
  • Quizgecko: best for mixed question types, including short answer and true/false, and for scanning a printed page.
  • Quizlet: best if you study with flashcards too. Notes become a full study set with Learn mode, practice tests and spaced repetition, and you can use sets other students made.
  • Revisely: best for written answers. Its AI marks the answers you type, and it reads handwritten notes and images.
  • Scholarize: best for a short chapter on a tight budget. $39.99 a year, or $19.99 once for a semester with nothing to cancel, and a free plan of 2 quizzes a month. For long notes, scanned pages or question types beyond multiple choice, one of the tools above will serve you better.
  • Solvely: best for messy inputs: audio recordings, photos, slides and documents in one quiz, up to 10 sources at a time.

How to get a good quiz from any of them

  1. Feed one topic at a time. A quiz from one chapter or lecture is sharper than one from a whole term of notes, and some tools only read the first few pages.
  2. Take it closed-book and timed. The point is to find out what you can recall without looking.
  3. Check every answer that disagrees with your notes. AI-written answer keys can be wrong.
  4. Re-quiz the misses a few days later. Practice testing and spacing are the two study techniques Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) rated most useful.

How we built this list

We read each tool's own pages on 25 October 2026 and copied the prices, free limits, inputs and question types they publish. Quizlet's and Quizgecko's web pricing pages refused our automated read and Mindgrasp's and Solvely's web pages showed no prices in their text, so for those four we used the in-app prices on each app's own US App Store listing, which do not always label the billing period; we say so where that applies. We did not test the rival tools hands-on and we show no star ratings or review counts. We included the tools an AI assistant (Gemini with Google Search) named for this question in our 25 October check, plus Quizlet, and Scholarize, which we make. No tool paid to be listed. Scholarize's prices and limits are from our pricing page and quiz generator page, rechecked against our own code on 28 October 2026.

Questions students ask

What is the best AI tool to turn my notes into a practice quiz?

It depends on your notes and budget. On 25 October 2026: NoteGPT says its quiz generator is completely free and takes PDFs, slides, Word files, links and YouTube; Solvely takes the most formats (up to 10 sources per quiz, including audio); Quizgecko offers the most question types (multiple choice, short answer, true/false and more); Quizlet turns uploaded notes into a full study set with practice tests; Revisely grades your written answers with AI; Mindgrasp builds quizzes from lectures and readings but needs a subscription after its trial; Scholarize has the cheapest paid plan here ($39.99 a year, or a $19.99 Semester Pass) but makes multiple-choice quizzes only and reads about the first 5,000 characters of a file.

Is there a free AI quiz generator from notes?

Yes. NoteGPT says its AI quiz generator is currently completely free. Scholarize gives one 5-question quiz with no account, then 2 quizzes a month on a free account with no card. Revisely, Quizgecko, Quizlet and Solvely have free starting tiers, but their free AI quiz limits were not published on the pages we read. Mindgrasp requires a subscription after a free trial.

Can AI make a quiz from a PDF?

Six of the seven say they take PDFs, and Quizlet says you can upload your notes. Limits differ: Revisely's free plan reads 5 pages per document (200 on paid plans), NoteGPT accepts files up to 50 MB, and Scholarize reads about the first 5,000 characters (a few pages) of a text-based PDF, so upload one chapter at a time. Scanned PDFs need a tool that reads images, such as Solvely, Quizgecko (scan a page) or Revisely (images and handwritten notes).

Are AI-generated quiz questions accurate?

Mostly, but not always. AI can write a question with a wrong answer key or one that is not in your notes. Check any answer that disagrees with your notes, and prefer tools that show an explanation for each answer so you can spot mistakes.

Is Scholarize's quiz generator free?

Yes, to a point. With no account you can take one 5-question multiple-choice quiz on a topic you type, and you enter your email to see the score. A free account (no card) gives 2 quizzes and 2 document uploads a month. Pro is $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year for 100 quizzes a month, and the Semester Pass is $19.99 once for 4 months.

Can I paste my notes into Scholarize?

Not directly: there is no paste box. Save your notes as a .txt, .md or Word .docx file (or a text-based PDF), upload it with a free account and choose From Document. The quiz is written from about the first 5,000 characters, multiple choice only.
